The cabin among glaciers: 3-day hiking adventure with dogs

Dates

1 Jul 2024 - 30 Sep 2024

Length

3 days in total

Description

Visit our idyllic cabin in untouched, silent Tverrdalen. The only way to get there in the summer is by foot. This trip provides a very special opportunity to experience the Svalbard wilderness in all its splendour joined by our furry four-legged friends.

Day 1: We pick you up at your accommodation in Longyearbyen at 09:00 am and drive to our husky kennel located 10 km outside Longyearbyen. Here we will inform you about the trip, equipment and safety, pack our backpacks and meet the furry friends who will join us on the trip. The hike will lead us through deep valleys and river crossings up to mountain plateaus and glaciers with spectacular views before we reach our cozy lodge Reinheim in Tverrdalen – the home of the reindeers. Our furry friends can relax outside and serve as polar bear guards, while we enjoy the evening in front of the fireplace and a good meal with the Svalbard nature surrounding us.

Day 2: We enjoy the nearby surroundings with a light backpack. Hiking on the glacier just behind our cabin, exploring the moraine area or climbing a mountain top – all is in reach. We will return to cabin not too late so those interested in a warm sauna and a shower can do this before dinner is served.

Day 3: We leave the cabin after a longer breakfast, follow a gentle uphill to a mountain pass and through a wide valley back to our starting point. On the way, we will cross little streams and rivers. We have good chances to spot reindeers and to explore the many arctic flowers and plants. Svalbard nature is vulnerable so we watch our steps and is not allowed to pick any plants or flowers. If we find fossils in front of the many glaciers, however, we can bring a few with us if not too heavy!

Expected arrival at your accommodation in Longyearbyen will be between 4 and 6 pm Day 3.

You should be in average to good physical shape, able to carry a backpack for the first and last day (between   6 to 8 kg). The dogs help us carry so we can bring nice fresh food. We will hike about 15km on day 1 and 3, while the 2nd day we can adjust to the group’s wishes. Meals, drinks and snacks are included and towels and bed sheets, too. We recommend solid hiking boots since this is wilderness with no established trails. Hiking poles you will get from us.

Max 8 guests. Age limit 12 years. If 4 guests or more we can arrange this trip on request if dates in the program do not fit your schedule.
