Arctic Husky Travellers is actively engaged in training new Arctic Nature Guides. We have close collaboration with the Arctic Nature Study in Longyearbyen, Svalbard see academic content here and the Wilderness and Nature Guide education at the LAPPIA Vocational School, Muonio in Finland. Every year we offer 5 to 8 trainee places from 3 to 5 weeks long. They learn about good animal care, nutrition and training, as well as how to guide safely with dogs in Arctic conditions there weather can change quickly and glaciers are on the move.
From 2022 to 2025, we also taught young adults at Svalbard Folk High School about dog care and dog mushing 2 days a week. The program included several overnight trips, culminating in a week-long dogsledding expedition to the East Coast, where we camped in tents. This expedition was the highlight of the year and served as the final exam tour for the 8 to 12 students we trained from August to May. While the original project has now ended, Svalbard Folk High School will continue the “dog school”, but in a scaled-down version with fewer dogs.
